Dog Lick Mat vs Treat Dispenser: Which Enrichment Toy Fits Your Dog?

Dog treat dispenser for enrichment comparison

Dog lick mats and stuffable treat dispensers both turn food into an activity, but they are not the same tool. A lick mat spreads food across a textured surface. A treat dispenser contains food inside or around a three-dimensional toy. The better choice depends on how your dog interacts with food and what kind of enrichment session you want.

Choose a lick mat for a flatter, simpler setup

A lick mat works with a thin layer of soft or spreadable food. The textured surface creates more small areas for your dog to work through than a plain plate or bowl.

Our SodaPup Honeycomb dog lick mat comes in two sizes and is freezer safe and top-rack dishwasher safe. Another option is the SodaPup Jigsaw enrichment lick mat.

Choose a treat dispenser for a more three-dimensional challenge

A stuffable treat dispenser can hold kibble or soft food inside a rubber shape. That changes how the dog has to approach the food and can make the activity easier to carry into a crate, travel bag, or quiet-time setup.

The SodaPup Honey Pot has a wide opening for soft food and kibble, while the SodaPup Flower Pot treat dispenser uses a different shape and holds about 3/4 cup of small kibble.

Think about cleanup

If you use wet food, cleaning matters. Choose a design you are realistically willing to wash after every session. Flat mats are easy to inspect visually, while open-top treat dispensers can be easier to reach inside than narrow-neck designs.

Think about your dog’s play style

A lick mat is not a chew toy. Dogs that immediately try to pick up and chew a mat may be better suited to a sturdier rubber enrichment toy, with supervision. No enrichment toy is indestructible, so inspect products regularly and remove anything that becomes damaged.

Use food portions intentionally

Enrichment still counts toward your dog’s daily food intake. You can use part of a normal meal, a small amount of suitable soft food, or a portion of your dog’s regular treats rather than adding a large amount of extra food.

Which one should you choose?

  • Lick mat: good for a flat, spreadable-food activity
  • Treat dispenser: good for a stuffable, three-dimensional activity
  • Both: useful if you want to rotate enrichment formats
