Holiday drives can mean longer routes, heavier traffic, unfamiliar houses, and more time in the car. Packing a dog travel kit before you leave makes the trip easier to manage.
1. Keep water easy to reach
Bring fresh water and a drinking setup you can access quickly. A portable dog water bottle works for short stops, while collapsible bowls are useful for meals and longer breaks.
2. Decide how your dog will ride
Use the setup appropriate for your dog and vehicle: a properly fitted harness with a compatible tether, a carrier, or a small-dog booster-style seat when the product fits your dog. Do not assume crash protection unless the manufacturer provides specific testing information.
3. Pack a leash where you can reach it
Do not bury the leash under luggage. Keep your main leash and a backup in an easy-to-reach part of the vehicle.
4. Bring routine items
- Food and treats
- Medications
- ID tags with current contact information
- Waste bags
- Towel or wipes
- Familiar blanket or mat
5. Plan breaks before the drive
For longer holiday routes, decide where you can stop for water, bathroom needs, and movement. Recheck harnesses, tethers, and carrier placement during stops.
6. Prepare for the destination
If you are staying with family, in a hotel, or at a rental, confirm pet rules before leaving. Bring a familiar quiet-space item and supervised enrichment for downtime if that helps your routine.
